Turning to the South

Welcome to the Arena of the Alchemist

Letter from Shiloh Sophia

Dear Color of Woman Sisterhood,

I am inviting you into inquiry about consciousness itself. It's exciting isn't it?

Please get a cup of tea and join me for Cafe. At each transition you are invited to have tea with me and allow this information to digest. It cannot be rushed through or glazed over. These integration messages between the turning of the wheel are part of the spell that moves you from one cycle to the next. Allows the last cycle to integrate and the next cycle to begin to kindle.

Did you get your tea or coffee? Sit with me in reading this post, for at least a half an hour, okay? Do you have that time? This is important for our work together.

In the the Archetype of Alchemist our primary work is that of exploring our consciousness - and choosing to work within a new area, you guessed it, called Alchemical Consciousness. This domain is a place within our consciousness that we CHOOSE to create, that may or may not actually exist. It resides in the area of the heart, of seeing into what is not seen. This area is connected with story and how we work with creativity.

Alchemical Consciousness is a new place we are inventing. A consciously curated space. A filing system in which you CHOOSE to bring your ideas and allow them to do their work. With our imagination we will explore this idea.

As you look at the image above, just consider it. It isn't truth. It is just a way of looking at information. You can see I based it off of my Talisman painting, because she gave rise to the content itself that became the Soul Fire. Let me say that again, the process of painting the Talisman is WHAT gave rise to the WHAT of Soul Fire - it is what made Soul Fire possible. That is why this is called a quest because each cycle brings you to the next cycle.

Through the element of fire, we are also in an integration of where we have come from. Connecting powerfully through the stories of our Legendary Self, the mysterious quirky magical moving energy of the Muse and our Talisman Artist identity where everything seemed to come up, come down and become unknown and known again through each gate. As you can see we are moving through layers of our own identity to get to the very heart of who we are and what we are here to cause and create. Your medicine basket is full of tools and while we may have felt we have already been traveling so so so long... it is time for another journey. This is a position of transformation - the Alchemist is the women who is AT CAUSE for what she changes. While the Talisman journeyed.... lots of movement in each direction, the Alchemist brings you into firm position at the campfire of the alchemical heart. And, an organic painting process that sets you freeeeee.....(I hope)

Preparation for this Cycle

While this work continues to be an internal viewing we move towards a combination of surrender to the unknown (because the painting will change so much and cover over layers that you will lose completely - yes this is a warning) but also into the known as you begin to work very tenderly in your own consciousness. A place we talk about but rarely truly visit, let alone hang out, let alone create an entire paintings worth of time and space to explore - what's inside our very thinking, the intelligent workings of our hearts, and how it all actually functions. We explore, what, if any, control we have over our actual mind - and discover how it works for us and how we choose to relate to it in the future.

You become the Alchemist of your own Soul Fire and spark the divine flame to burn up what no longer is useful to you on the path of your soul work - which is steadily leading you on the path of your own leadership. There is always intensity with fire - but there is also playfulness (toward the second half of the painting), because you are invited to transcend the method you have just learned. The Alchemist burns up what is no longer needed.

The reason this teaching is called the Alchemist is this: You will take all you have been, all you are, all you care about, and transform it into the GOLD the of your soul work, which is lit by the sparks from your soul fire. Your soul work is that which you are here to cause and create on this planet. This cycle of Alchemist is designed to catalyze you so you will never again not be IN the work of who you are - you just BECOME, you giving birth to yourself through fire. Perhaps you shall even arrive. The Soul Fire flame, the spark of divinity is what the Alchemist uses to light her fire, and what the Phoenix uses to light her own nest on fire – and yes, she lights it herself, and yes, she dances on her own flames, through choice.

Connect with the energy of the alchemist and phoenix and phoenix within you - listen into the whispers in the field about these words for you. Look them up, read their stories, listen to their songs.

Then let it all go as you begin your own painting. In Color of Woman we work with archetypes that while they may be informed by what we know about how others have spoken about them, we still define our own relationship to it. Dr. Estes who wrote Women Who Run With the Wolves told us in a workshop - "don't just look up what dreams mean only - you must ask what each symbol that shows up means to you - in your consciousness".

The painting series in this cycle is an invitation in learning how to think and in using creativity as the ‘way’ thinking happens. In Talisman, you went on a journey and ultimately arrived at the space and place of your own content – sharing your gift with the world.
In the Soul Fire Sessions, I share with you the heart of my own core content as it relates to the realms of consciousness. Sometimes when we start a quest we have no idea where we are headed – do we? Hopefully we are delightfully surprised when we arrive! I know I was during this series. You can almost see me working it out in each moment...finding what is next. Listening to the Muse. There was intense structure that I wanted to come through but the how of it was revealed in each moment. I think of the rawness of these videos as a teaching also - in how you can be present in the moment to what wants to be revealed.

First you are nowhere. Suddenly nowhere becomes now here.

Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” ~ Carl Jung

About this somewhat wacky wild and wonderful series. It was filmed over two years, both times upon my return from my European adventures. I receive new information and bring it to you when I get home (hence why my students actually like for me to travel). It was only revealed in full in 2014, the previous year only half of it was done. I admit, I had concerns when I shared it - wondering if it was too much - and that was echoed by a few graduates who did it, one Shaman asked me, are you sure you are supposed to reveal this information? My answer is something like this: "I think we need to know how we operate within, to make the invisible visible so we can work with it. And we need to redefine consciousness for ourselves. We have left it to psychology and Jung for so long, we are reclaiming our journey." I felt vulnerable exposing this in such an experimental raw state - it was much less structure for me in some ways than other 13 step processes - however, the students who did it said it WAS THE FIRE that catalyzed their self initiation into being a teacher. So I will surrender and let you make your own choices and I hope you are lit up by the process!

Alchemist is about learning to know what you know. To choose to be your own Alchemical priestess at cause for you own concoctions as well as your equations and systems and designs. While I used my own information in this video to take you inward, my hope is that it brings you into your own information.

When we don't know what we know, and how to speak about it, it is way too easy for other people's ideas to make up our beliefs for us. Often we don't even know that it is happening. The true work of self expression can liberate you from the ideas of others. Including this one. Then we can choose what we would like to keep or discard.

Remember, as we are inundated by the information of this world: You have your own information.

A true teacher, meaning one who is true of heart, will do their best to point you to what you know. They will use what they know, which is their information, to point you towards the hidden doorways of your own consciousness - this is what we do in Intentional Creativity.

The more we can be present with what is uniquely ours to know, the more we can shed unwanted skins and liberate ourselves.

Your inherent wildness seeks expression...will you open the door?

The inquiry I invite you to respond to below and in your journal at this compass turn is, for you,

  • What lights you UP at THIS point in your journey? Makes your heart quicken?

The next one is more of a riddle:

  • If you ask yourself where your consciousness is, what comes up?

Share with us.

A Note from Shiloh Sophia about the SoulFire Series
There is so much I care about seeing transformed in the world, as you well know. I started all of this work in the world with art as a path of healing in my desire to end suffering for women and girls. Without actually planning it, art became the method by which I attempt this. My work now is to teach others so they can share their gifts and unique content with the world – and ease whatever suffering is connected to their piece of the red thread and their heart desires.

I teach you everything I know – I pretty much share and bare it all. But if I cannot pass on the gift of HOW to think and access YOUR own material I don’t know what good all my teaching is. In our initial interview, I spoke to you about this – about this training being a vehicle, a way to your own gifts. With this series what I have to share with you is about how to think and access your own material. To get it conscious and create deeper access.

For this, we need the energy of SOUL FIRE!!!! I have found that most women feel called the the energy of the ALCHEMIST  - one who can transform one thing to another....by choice. The painting is the PLACE where our alchemy lab is located.

“Whatever is rejected from the self, appears in the world as an event.”~ Carl Jung

During the Soul Fire Session Videos, you are invited to be SUPER present so ideas arrive for you and TO YOU while you are creating. The vision is to create an ‘arena’ in which information will ARISE for you, to you, and through you. This is a sacred vessel - this area is your alchemical consciousness and your painting is holding the actual physical space for it to emerge. We call this area alchemical consciousness, it's a new place to play in the field.

You will notice many similarities in this material to other classes rooted in the Intentional Creativity method, similar to what we did when we worked with the Muse painting as well as in the Talisman and the Legendary Self paintings. However, with Soul Fire, we go to another layer. There will be some repetition for learning so when you teach you will have these tools (wing, heart, right left brain etc.) used as a foundation - then, something emerges all together different. A powerful call to freedom - to you finding your own voice and even, releasing what you  have already learned. I am asking you to look through a deeper lens with intense attention to what is happening for you, and to you, while you are painting. DURING THE PAINTING YOU CAN ACCESS A HEIGHTENED INTUITION that will not have to leave you again.

SOUL FIRE IS A TRANSMISSION of the ESSENCE OF INTENTIONAL CREATIVITY.

Let's talk about the process:
The first strokes you are invited back to the quest – to your inquiry and then you consciously light the soul fire on the heart.

If you don’t want to do a heart – then choose another image that works for you. I work with it so much because it means so much to me and is such a symbol for both love and awakening. Once you really get the hang of your illustration, use whatever symbols you want to – I often work with these common ones because they resonate with so many women.

You will notice once again, in video 4, I work with the past, present, and future, – and yes we have already done that in other arenas. We spend less time on it in this series but we do this to get it conscious. Your past isn’t just the old stuff – its the stuff that happened yesterday and we want it ALL CONSCIOUS. This is a GREAT pattern to work with in any of your Color of Woman 13 step workshops.

Remember, the invitation is to allow information to come WHILE you are painting in the process. In the outline of the painting (Session One Part 2) we define an ‘arena’ in which we work and think. Yes, this takes us back to the compass concept – a way of ‘navigating’ our inner world.

When you work with intentional creativity, the information you seek is within you and when, through prayer, dreams, desires, it is combined with the Love of the Divine it can be quite powerful. However, for it to be in alignment in this particular way, you may have to surrender something connected with your ego…that which is called will, or that which you know. During the Soul Fire painting sessions I would like you to SURRENDER and be free in your strokes. If flashes of insight come, jot them down and return to the painting. We focus so much on will and force, we often miss the grace of receiving that happens when we surrender our will and allow the divine to flow through us in our work.

Each spiritual tradition has their own teaching on surrendering and allowing the Divine to work in your life and, of course, you will find your own way. But what if instead of focusing your intention in a determined affirmation-energy-kind-of-way (I WILL GET THE INFORMATION I NEED), you hold it loosely like a flower. Come humbly and look for some insight; gently move into the inquiries. Surrendering needing-to-know or having it be life-changing (we secretly long to have our boats rocked instantly), opens us to the flow of information connected with the Divine’s plan for us – instead of our plan.

This is a gentle approach holding the process with a light touch, softening our forehead and hearts into a space of possibility instead of needing to KNOW NOW.

You are your own guide.

Blessings in your painting dear ones. Blessings.

Soulfire Talk (2014)

A bonus video from 2014 in which Maestra Shiloh Sophia talks about Soulfire, tribe, being "healed enough", levels of consciousness, and the critic and the muse! Settle in and enjoy this half hour talk...

Intentional Creativity Philosophy

Write a paragraph describing Intentional Creativity in your own words.

As you move through the world and share about this training and your teaching events, people are going to ask you - "What do you mean by Intentional Creativity?" This assignment is an opportunity to find your own language around the philosophy of Intentional Creativity.

This is a great exercise to write up on your own and then share with each other so that you can find  ways to talk about the method. When refined, this will make a great addition to your website! (A draft version is fine for submission.)

⭐️ Submit your IC Philosophy paragraph

You will be able to use anything presented in this livestream to teach your own Dancing Between Worlds Class. Watching will give you an idea of a half day class you can teach in person or virtually. Following up on the Mountain Session (if you haven’t watched please do) you will see how to apply Intentional Creativity to any theme and create curriculum out of it. Shiloh’s theme of women between worlds is a topic she has taught on for over twenty years in different ways that really resonates with students. Of course, you can change the name, make it your own and discover a deeper love of how to work with IC and the body.

Intentional Creativity Lineage

This is a writing exercise to practice sharing your story

What was your personal experience of discovering Intentional Creativity? How does IC fit into the larger story of your Lineage?

Consider sharing about the circumstances when you first encountered IC, who introduced you to the method, and the details of how you joined the lineage. This is often an engaging story and you'll find this share to be a wonderful post on your website, lovely in an opening circle and an enrolling conversation to potential students!

Consider how to tell the story with you as an integral piece - what message was passing from hand to hand until it arrives to you as an IC Teacher and then passes on to your students as the continued lineage? What would you "carve in stone"?

There is much flexibility in how you choose to write this and build the field of acknowledgement. Place yourself inside a worthy story!

Write up a share that's between a paragraph and a page.

Artist Statement

This exercise is an opportunity for you to begin to define and articulate the story of yourself as an artist.

An Artist’s Statement is a declaration of your artist self and explanation of "why you do what you do".  The Artist Statement is a way for people to connect with you and deepen their appreciation of your work. There many different kinds and styles and it is quite worthwhile to go on a research expedition and read the statements of artists you admire. This process of creating an Artist Statement helps you understand what it is you are doing, find language around it and illuminates how you are relating to yourself as Artist.

Pick one of these as way to begin:

  • What is your inspiration for creating?
  • Is there a guiding value or idea that informs your work?
  • What is the emotional point of view of your work?
  • How is your art related to the way you look at life? How can you talk about the work from a conceptual and/or emotional point of view?
  • What do you want people to know about your work?

Read Examples from Sue Hoya Sellars, Shiloh Sophia, Emily Grieves & Jassy Watson

⭐️ Submit a draft of your Artist Statement

Creative Bio + Photo

A Creative Bio highlights your accomplishments in paragraph form as well as your influences, experiences, and your artistic perspective.

You'll want to include

  • Relevant education, experience or training including mention of your Intentional Creativity Training.
  • Important exhibits, accolades, awards as applicable.
  • Influences and inspirations for your artistic direction.
  • A description of your current offerings (workshops, private practice etc).
  • A description of your current work or projects.
  • Where you were born and where you currently live.
  • Something quirky and inspiring to elevate it to a 'creative' bio!

Expect your bio to be about a half a page in length.

For this assignment you will also submit a current photo of yourself that represents your teacher self. (Photo dimensions are up to you.)

Visit the websites of some of your favorite inspiring people and see what they said that you like. You can update it as often as you like - it is one of those things that keeps evolving. New items will replace less relevant things as your journey continues.
